George Samuel Fenton
Private George Fenton (Service no. 2854) was born in Charters Towers, Queensland circa 1890. At some point the family moved to Cordeaux River and George gained employment as an engine driver.
He embarked with 9th Reinforcements, 15th Battalion on HMAT A33 Ayrshire on 1st September, 1915. He arrived in Gallipoli on 13th November, 1915 and after the evacuation he was transferred to 47th Battalion in March 1916. He travelled to France with the Battalion and saw service on the Western Front.
On 24th April, 1916 he was promoted to Lance Corporal, soon after on the 29th July, 1916 he was promoted to Corporal.
On 6th August, 1916 he was wounded in action with shell shock. He recovered and returned to the Battalion, but on 9th June, 1917 he was wounded a second time receiving a gunshot wound to the face. This ended his active service as he was discharged from the AIF in England on 18th July, 1918, medically unfit due to deafness.
He gained employment in England as a munitions worker after discharge.
On 18th May, 1918 George married at Southall, London. He returned to Australia with his wife and they lived at Cordeaux River until his premature death in 1924.
