Walter Franklin (Service no: 1534) was born in London in about 1865 and travelled to Australia. In 1888 he married Lillian Palmer and had a son Cyril who later also served in the war. The family lived in Unanderra, N.S.W.

Walter had served for 14 months in South Africa with the NSW Army Medical Corps.

At the time of enlistment for World War 1 Walter was 44 years of age and was immediately promoted from Private to Corporal.

He embarked with 1st Reinforcements 19th Battalion on HMAT Themistocles A32 on 12th May 1915 and arrived on Gallipoli. He was wounded in action on 6th September1915 with a bullet wound to his arm.

He was returned to Australia in November 1915 and discharged medically unfit on 23 December1915.

He was aged 55 years when he was diagnosed with chronic rheumatism.
