William George Porter, born to Samuel George Porter and Harriet L Brown (nee) on 1 July 1896, lived at 33 Brownlow Rd, Haggerston, London. He was a Corporal in the 6th London Regiment following his enlistment.

William served in both World War I and II. During the Second World War he was captured at Singapore and was moved to Changi from 1942 until 1945 as a POW. The camp was liberated in September 1945 by the 5th Indian Division and troops were being repatriated within a week.

He was linked to a number of professions before and after the wars which included the Straits Settlement Police Force, Chief Inspector in 1928 and a Coroner.

He married Juanita Howell (nee) and together, they had three children. In 1951 the family moved to Australia for William’s retirement and settled at 41 Baan Baan St, Dapto where William lived for the rest of his life.

He died at the age of 78 on 11 August, 1974 at Thirroul.
