Walter Colbert (Service No 4457) was born in Kiama around 1892.

When he enlisted he was 26 years old, single, and stated his occupation as 'Driver (horse)'.  Walter named his sister, Mrs Massey of Unanderra, as his next of kin.

Walter was initially assigned to the 13th Battalion, 14th Reinforcement. He embarked with his Unit, from Sydney on HMAT A70 Ballarat, on 16th February, 1916, and served in Egypt and on the Western Front.

On 1st April, 191 Walter was transferred to the 54th battalion. While he was not injured he was admitted to hospital with various illnesses and his general health saw him returned to Australia in February, 1918.

Walter was discharged medically unfit on 17 May. 1918.

Walter died at the age 38.

Walter's brother, Martin Colbert (Service No 3608), also served.
