Corporal Harold Quist (Service no. 1987) was born in Wollongong circa 1890 and was a single 25 year old clerk when he enlisted. He embarked on HMAT A 54 Runic with 3rd Reinforcements 19th Battalion on 9th August 1915.

On arrival at Gallipoli on 29th September, 1915 he was taken on the strength of A coy 18th Battalion and saw service on Gallipoli with them. After the evacuation he was transferred in May, 1916 to the Australian Signal Coy. He served on the Western Front and on 29th October 1917 he was promoted to Lance Corporal. Then on 20th August, 1918 he was again promoted to Corporal.

After returning to Australia in 1919 he was discharged from the AIF on 19th October, 1919.

Harold was luckier than his brother Rupert who died in France.
