James Robert Stevens
James Stevens (Service no. 3302) was born in Dapto circa 1897 and attended Dapto Public School.
At enlistment James was single, 18 years old and worked as a grocer.
James embarked on HMAT A29 Suevic on 20th December, 1915 with 7th Reinforcements 19th Battalion. After arriving in Egypt he was transferred to the Pioneers and saw service on the Western Front. He had a number of hospital admissions for various illnesses and was transferred to 6th Battalion. He survived the war uninjured but in 1919 he was again admitted to hospital and on 18th March, 1919 he died from Pneumonia.
James Stevens is buried in Tidworth Military Cemetery, Row C, Grave 374.
His brother William Stevens (Service No 67701) enlisted in August, 1918 but the war ended before he saw service and he was discharged. The family moved from Dapto to Unanderra at some point and both brothers are commemorated on the Unanderra Public School Roll of Honour.
