Private William Mcnair (Service no. 294) was born in Queensland circa 1884. At the time of enlistment he was a single 31 year old labourer residing in Wollongong. He embarked on HMAT A 32 Themistocoles on 12th May, 1915 with 3 Platoon A coy 17th Battalion. He arrived in Egypt and was sent to Gallipoli on 16th August, 1915.

On 27th August, 1915 William was involved in fighting at Suvla. At about 6:30 pm he left his trench and charged the Turkish trenches when he was hit. Court of inquiry evidence states he was the platoon bomb thrower and is believed to have been killed instantly. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Lone Pine Memorial. He is also remembered on the Wollongong Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour.
