Details:

Charles Berry Grieve (Service no. 462) was born on 15th July, 1889 in Wollongong and was a career soldier at the outbreak of war, serving as a permanent soldier with the CMF. He took up duty in the AIF as a Warrant Officer and embarked on HMAT A24 Benalla on 19th October, 1914 with HQ coy Service Corps.

Charles saw service in Egypt and on 25th January, 1915 he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. He saw service on Gallipoli being again promoted to Lieutenant on 28th May, 1915. He returned to Egypt in October 1915 and on 21st March, 1916 was promoted to Captain. He was acting adjutant for 1st Divisional Train and then transferred to 5th Divisional Train.

The divisional trains were a support for front line troops, they provided everything the troops needed to be able to do their job; all food, clothing, ammunition, water, accommodation, bathing facilities, recreation, transport and pay.  And all of this was provided under some very trying circumstances when in the field.

Captain Grieve then transfered to the Western Front and on 1st January, 1917 he was awarded the Military Cross. While on leave in London he married Iris Banbury on 17th June, 1919. They divorced in March 1921. He returned to Australia in September 1919 and was discharged on 9th January, 1920.

Charles Grieve is remembered on the Wollongong Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour.
