Ernest Geoffrey Sutton
Ernest Geoffrey Sutton (Service no. 3009) was born in Sydney and educated at Sydney Grammar School. At the time of enlistment he was a single 24 year old grazier from Smiths Hill Wollongong. He embarked on HMAT A31 Ajana on 31st May, 1915 with 5th Field Ambulance where he served with his brother Arthur (Service no. 2838).
Ernest arrived on Gallipoli on 16th August, 1915 and saw service there until the evacuation. Back in Egypt he was transferred to 15th Field Ambulance and went to the Western Front with them. On 28th March, 1917 he was promoted to Lance Corporal and again on 28th August, 1917 to Corporal.
On 24th November, 1917 he was made Lance Sergeant. Records show Ernest to have been uninjured and returned to Australia. He was discharged on 1st July, 1919. After the war he married Lena Capell and raised a family. In 1940 he joined the Trundle Volunteer Force for home defence until it was disbanded in 1945. He died in 1973 aged 83.
