Frank Urquhart
Private Frank Urquhart (Service no. 5774) was born in Richmond, Victoria on 5th January, 1893, but at the time of enlistment he was working and living in Wollongong. He was a single 23 year old cleaner.
Frank embarked on HMAT A46 Clan MacGillivray with 18th Reinforcements 13th Battalion on 3rd May, 1916. After training in England he joined his battalion in France on 1st February, 1917. His time in the trenches was short as he was wounded in action on 4th February, 1917. He was then evacuated to 45th Casualty Clearing Station with serious gun shot wounds to his knee and shoulder. After treatment in hospital in England he was returned to Australia in May 1918 and discharged medically unfit on 31st December, 1918.
Prior to leaving England he married Katie White in Dorset on 31st March, 1918 and she returned to Australia with him. Katie died in Kiama in 1923, after which Frank left the Illawarra and settled in Queensland.
On 22nd September, 1926 he married Alice Olsen. The Urquharts remained in Queensland and raised their family.
Frank Urquhart is remembered on the Wollongong Congregational Church Roll of Honour.
