Alice Mary Cooper
Matron Alice Cooper was born in Wollongong circa 1864, one of twelve children, and was a trained nurse when she enlisted at age 50.
She embarked on 14th July, 1915 as Matron of the Hospital Ship Karoola. She spent the war travelling between Australia and combat areas bringing home and treating wounded and sick . On 25th July, 1917 she was awarded the Royal Red Cross class 2 for service and on 25th March, 1920 she received the Royal Red Cross class 1.
Alice was discharged from service on 10th March 1919. After the war she worked at the Randwick Military Hospital. She died in Manly in 1955 at the age of 91.
