Albert Henry Sloan
Albert Sloan (Service No 1379) was born in Wollongong, N.S.W. He was 20 years old, single, and working as a hairdresser when he enlisted in the AIF.
Albert had spent 4 years in 28th Infantry CMF. He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A14 Euripides on 20th October 1914 with G Company, 3rd Battalion.
After arriving in Egypt Albert's health became a problem. In January 1915 while on a route march he collapsed and was admitted to hospital. He was fit enough to sail with his unit to Gallipoli arriving on 25th April. Three weeks later he was evacuated due to concussion and shell shock.
Albert was returned to Australia in September 1915, and discharged medically unfit due to heart trouble on 2nd December 1915.
On 13th January 1916 he re-enlisted and was posted to D Company, 3rd Battalion. Albert did not leave Australia and was again discharged medically unfit on 21st July 1916.
Some time after this he married Irene Louise Buckingham.
On 17th April 1918 he again enlisted but this time used the alias of Alfred Smith (Service No 87613).
On 24th October 1918 'Alfred' he was listed as a deserter. On 14th November 1918 Albert went to a house in Arncliffe, N.S.W. and sadly took his own life by poison.
Albert Sloan is commemorated on the Wollongong Congregational Church Roll of Honour.
