Ernest John Schadel (Service No 2228) was born in Nowra, N.S.W., in May 1893.

At enlistment he was 22 years old, single and worked as a railway porter at Bellambi, N.S.W.

Ernest embarked on HMAT A63 Karoola with the 3rd Battalion, 6th Reinforcement on 16 June 1915. Ernest arrived at Gallipoli, Turkey with A Company on 4 August, 1915 just in time for the Battle of Lone Pine.

Sadly, Ernest was killed in action between 7 and 12 August, 1915 and has no known grave.

Ernest's two brothers George Edward (Service No 1661 ) and William Herbert (Service No 1074), also served.
