George Edward Schadel (Service No 1661) was born in June 1889.

At enlistment he was 26 years old, single and worked as a coke worker.

In 1915, George married Vera Clark in Wollongong, N.S.W., and his next of kin was changed before he embarked for overseas.

He embarked on HMAT A72 Beltana on 9th November, 1915 with the 1st Light Horse Regiment, 12th Reinforcement.

George disembarked in Egypt and saw action soon after.

On 10th August, 1916 he was promoted to Lance Corporal and on 10th June, 1917 promoted once again to Corporal.

George was killed in action near Jerusalem and is buried in the Jerusalem War Cemetery,  Row J, Grave 26.

George's two brothers who also served were Ernest John (Service No 2228) and William Herbert (Service No 1074)
