Private George Popple (Service no. 2702) was born at Balgownie, N.S.W. circa 1885.

At the time of enlistment George was single, 31 years old & worked as an ironworker's assistant.

He embarked on HMAT A40 Ceramic with 6th Reinforcements 45th Battalion on 7th October, 1916.  George saw service on the Western Front with D coy 45th Battalion.  He was in hospital in early July 1917 and rejoined his unit on 23rd August, 1917.

On 13th October, 1917 George was killed during the terrible Battle for Passchendaele and has no known grave but is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, Belgium.

George's service & sacrifice is commemorated on the Balgownie War Memorial.
