James Devirs (Service no 17301) was born in Clifton, NSW about 1888. At the time of enlistment he was a single 29 year old coal miner.

He embarked on HMAT A46 Clan McGilliveray on 10th May 1917 but didn't arrive in France until 5th March 1918. James saw service on the Western Front. He joined 39th Battalion on 1st June 1918 from the Engineers.

He returned to Australia in May 1919 and was discharged on 27th August 1919. After the war James worked as a tram conductor. On 4th May 1943 while on his way home from work he was hit by a car and killed. Court reports name his widow as Alice May Devirs. His brother Patrick (Service No 3292) was killed in action at the Western Front in May 1916..
