Edward MacFarlane was born in Bourke, NSW and was educated at North Sydney Grammar and Barker College. In 1909 he joined the Scots Rifle Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant. By 1st July 1912 he was with 39th Infantry and a year later the 37th Infantry. When Edward enlisted in the AIF he was a single 23 year old dairy farmer residing at Shellharbour, NSW. No Service Number appears on any of his records.

He embarked on HMAT A14 Euripides with G Company, 3rd Battalion on 20th October 1914 as part of the first contingent. He arrived in Egypt in December 1914 and was promoted to Lieutenant of G Company en-route to Gallipoli. Edward landed on 25th April but was wounded that same day and was evacuated to hospital for treatment of gun shot wounds to his back and shoulder. He returned to Gallipoli on 5th June, was promoted to Captain on 23rd June and continued in action until 1st August when he was wounded with a gun shot wound to the head. He was evacuated onto the hospital ship Rewa but died from his wounds on 2nd August.

Edward was buried at sea and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial.
