Details: 

Denis Egan from Wollongong had travelled to Darwin where he enlisted. At the time he was a single 24 year old labourer. He embarked from Brisbane on HMAT A74 Marathon on 27th October 1916 with 7th Reinforcements, 49th Battalion.

He arrived in France on 13th April 1917 and was wounded in action soon after. On 7th June 1917 he received a gun shot wound to his back and was evacuated to hospital for treatment. He returned to his unit and was wounded a second time on 6th May 1918.

Denis returned to Australia in June 1919 and was discharged on 8th August 1919. His brothers Patrick (Service No 1546) and William (Service No 558) also served.
