John Dean was born in Wollongong and at the time of enlistment was a single 29 year old bank clerk who had spent 3 years in the Commonwealth Military Force.

He embarked on SS Te-Anau on 20th November 1915 with 4th Tropical Force. John served in Rabaul and was promoted to Corporal on 1st January 1917. He returned to Australia in April 1917 with the rank of Sergeant and was discharged on 26th October 1918. In November 1919 John married Kathleen Gladys Sproule. He died in 1977.

John is remembered on the Wollongong Congregational Church Roll of Honour. His brother Royden Alvin Dean (Service No's 970 & 4077) also served.
