Details:

Frederick Henry Bennett (Service No 1718) was born in Cairns, Queensland. He was 19 years of age, single, and working as a labourer when he enlisted in January 1915.

Frederick nominated Florence Roberts, of Bombo, N.S.W. as his next of kin.  In documents in Frederick's file, a letter written by Florence states that she was not a relative and that she had only known him for about 12 months when he enlisted.  Florence also said she did not know of any relatives of Frederick's.

While in Heliopolis, Egypt, Frederick contracted malaria.  Frederick also suffered from bouts of Influenza, requiring hospitilization.

While serving at Gallipoli, he was wounded in action, sustaining a gun shot wound to his left thigh. Around this time he was promoted to Lance Corporal, but demoted to Private on 26 January 1917.  Frederick quickly redeemed himself, being promoted to Lance Corporal again on 25 February 1917.

After serving on the Gallipoli Peninsula, Frederick was sent to France to fight on the Western Front.

On 15 April 1917 he sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder at Lagnicourt, France, and died from this injury.

Frederick is buried at the Hermines Hill British Cemetery, France.

He is listed on the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honor and at Centenary Hall, Tongarra Road, Albion Park, N.S.W.
