George Frederick Mason
George Mason (Service No 4051) was born in Manchester, England around 1891 and found his way to Australia where he settled in Woonona, NSW.
At enlistment he was single, 25 years old and employed as a brickyard labourer. He listed his sister Mrs Hoy of Woonona, N.S.W. as his next of kin.
George embarked on HMAT A7 Medic on 30th December 1915 with 12th Reinforcements, 3rd Battalion. He arrived in Egypt and was posted to C Company, 3rd Battalion.
The battalion arrived in France on 28th March 1916. George saw service on the Western Front as a machine gunner until 3rd November 1916 when C Company were on the front line at Fleurs. George was in a dugout that was hit by a shell; George and 5 other soldiers were killed.
There is no known grave for George; his service & sacrifice is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneaux and at the Bulli-Woonona War Memorial.
