David Hugh Sproule
David Sproule (Service No 2703) was born at Woodbrook, Jamberoo, near Kiama, N.S.W. in 1895.
David enlisted when he was 21 years old. He was single and a farmer at Jamberoo. He had spent 3 years in the cadets.
David embarked from Sydney on HMAT A24 Benalla on 9th November 1916 with 37th Battalion, 5th Reinforcement. His brother Thomas Sproule (Service No 2704), had also enlisted and embarked with him in the same group.
David arrived in England and after training went to France, arriving on 3rd May 1917. David served on the Western Front and on 3rd October 1917 while at the Battle of Passchendaele he was wounded, sustaining a gun shot wound to the arm. David was transferred to hospital in England for treatment.
He returned to France on 8th May 1918 but was wounded a second time on 1st August 1918, with a gun shot wound to his abdomen. This was the end of David's active service and he was transferred to 5th Battalion on 9th November 1918.
He returned to Australia in July 1919 and was discharged on 30th October 1919.
David died in Kiama in 1942.
