John McArthur
John McArthur (Service No 1229) was born in Stirlingshire Scotland in about 1886. At the time of enlistment he was a single 29 year old miner at Scarborough,NSW. He embarked on HMAT A40 Ceramic from Melbourne on 25th June 1915 with 18th Battalion, D Company. He was sent to Gallipoli in August 1915 and was posted missing soon after.He had been wounded in action on 22nd August and was evacuated to hospital for treatment of a head wound. He was sent to England for further treatment and returned to Egypt in March 1916.
He went to France and was wounded a second time on 28th July 1916, again evacuated to hospital with shell shock and serious abrasions to his kidneys. He recovered and returned to the Western Front, but was sent to hospital on 9th June 1917 with trench fever. While on leave in Scotland he married Mary Walker on 17th July 1917. He returned to the front on 22nd November 1917 and on 19th May 1918 he was wounded a third time, no injury stated.
He returned to Australia in March 1919 and was discharged medically unfit on 1st July 1919. He died in Sydney in 1954.
