Alan Dawes (Service No 2612) was born in Dapto, N.S.W.

He enlisted at the age of 20, when he was single, and working as a grocer.  Alan had previously spent 4 years in the CMF.

He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A14 Euripides with 6th Reinforcements, 18th Battalion on 2nd November 1915.  Alan arrived in Egypt on 14th December 1915 and was immediately admitted to hospital suffering from pneumonia.

On 14th February 1916 he was transferred to 3rd Battalion and went with them to France, arriving on 28th March 1916.  On 25th July 1916 while fighting at the Somme Alan was wounded.  He was admitted to hospital in France for treatment of shrapnel wounds to his side.  He returned to his unit on 14th September 1916.

On 22nd November 1916 Alan was promoted to Lance Corporal, then on 9th June 1917  promoted to Corporal.  On 12th October 1917 Alan received a further promotion to Sergeant.

Alan returned to Australia in March 1919 and was discharged on 10th May 1919.

In 1921 he married Metta Crummy.
