Leslie George Doherty
Leslie Doherty (Service No 5082) was born in Sydney around 1890.
He married Selena Hunt in 1911 and they moved to Wollongong, N.S.W. with their family, wheere Leslie worked as a coal miner.
Leslie enlisted when he was 26 years old. He embarked on HMAT SS Makarini with the 1st Battalion, 16th Reinforcements on 1st April 1916. After a short stay in Egypt he was sent to France, arriving on 20th May 1916. On 8th June 1916 Leslie was transferred to the 1st Pioneer Battalion.
Leslie was killed in action while fighting during the Poziere campaign. There is no known grave for Leslie and he is commorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneaux.
A letter on file from his sister-in-law complains that his wife was not notified of his death by the authorities before she saw his death in the paper. A letter of apology was sent.
