William Edward Noble
William Noble was born in Bowral, N.S.W. William's family moved to Wollongong, N.S.W. when his father was transferred to Wollongong Police Station.
William enlisted at the age of 21. He was single, worked as a blacksmith, had spent 5 years in the cadets and held a commission in the C.M.F.
Due to his commission with the C.M.F., William was accepted into the AIF as a 2nd Lieutenant. He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A69 Warialda on 8th October 1915 with 10th Reinforcement, 4th Battalion.
After arriving in Egypt, William was transferred to 53rd Battalion on 16th February 1916. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 15th April 1916 and joined D Company arriving in France on 6th June 1916.
William was seen leading his men in a charge on the German trenches at Fromelle when he was killed: 'N.C.Os & men of his platoon ... state definitely that Lieut NOBLE fell ... was so badly wounded that he died where he fell, in the Germans front line .'
William is buried in V.C. Corner Cemetery & Memorial, Fromelles, France.
