James Crane (Service No 5070) was born in Bulli, N.S.W.

In 1901 James married Sarah Salisbury and they lived at Bulli with their children.

He enlisted when he was 38 years old, and at this time James was employed as a coal miner. 

James embarked from Sydney on SS Makarini with the 1st Battalion, 16th Reinforcements on 1st April 1916.  He arrived in France on 27th July 1916, serving on the Western Front until he was evacuated to hospital in England suffering from rheumatism and debility on 31st December 1916. 

James did not return to France until 5th April 1918.  He remained at the front until the war ended.

He returned to Australia in February 1919 and was discharged on 24th October 1919.  He died in 1938 and is buried at Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney.
