Joseph embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A16 Star of Victoria with 16th Reinforcements, 13th Battalion on 31st March 1916.

After arriving in Egypt he was sent to France and arrived on 18th July 1916, joining the 45th Battalion that day.  On 30th December 1916, he was admitted to hospital in England with a burnt arm.

Joseph returned to his unit in Belgium on 4th May 1917.  While fighting with 4 platoon, A Company, 45th battalion, on 7th June 1917, he was engaged in the Messines Ridge battle.  After the battle, Joseph was reported missing, one of his fellow soldiers stating that he had been wounded by a bomb splinter, and taken to the Battalion Dressing Station and from there to the Clearing Station.  A second soldier declared that he saw Joseph's body in a shell-hole during the battle.  It was later established that Joseph had been killed during the battle.

There is no known grave for Joseph; he is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium.
