Augustus Hendrickes
Augustus Hendrickes (Service No 5121) was born in Sydney in 1884. He married Martha Cotford on 2nd June 1908 in Sydney, and the family moved to the Illawarra region of N.S.W.
Augustus and Martha had 3 children, and were living at Woonona, N.S.W. when he enlisted; he was 31 years old and worked as a coal miner.
Augustus embarked from Sydney on board SS Makarini with 16th Reinforcements, 1st Battalion on 1st April 1916. The troops arrived in Egypt on 9th May 1916 and were then sent on to France, arriving on 20th May 1916.
Augustus served on the Western Front until 5th November 1916, when he was wounded, sustaining a gun shot wound to his left thigh. He was evacuated to hospitals in France and England for treatment and finally returned to his unit in Belgium on 28th June 1917. While engaged in the fighting at Passchendaele on 4th October 1917, Augustus was killed. There are no further details about Ausgustus' death.
He is buried in Aeroplane Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium - Plot IV, Row A, Grave 3.
