Maurice Marks
Maurice Marks (Service No 7099) was born in Leeds, England
When Maurice enlisted he was living in Thirroul, N.S.W. He was 18 years old, single, and working as a clipper. Maurice had also served for 4 years in the Senior Cadets.
He embarked from Melbourne on HMAT A71 Nestor with 21st Reinforcements, 19th Battalion, on 28th February 1918. The troops arrived in England on 20th April 1918. Maurice was sent on to France and arrived on 19th July 1918 where was transferred to 15 Platoon, D Company, 35th Battalion, on 21st July 1918.
At about 4:40am on 8th August 1918, Maurice was fighting around the Somme area when he was hit by shrapnel in the back and knee. He was taken to a dressing station but died there before treatment.
Maurice is buried in Villers-Bretonneaux Military Cemetery, France: Plot II, Row C, Grave 3.
