William Phillips
William Phillips (Service No 1853B) was born at Berry, N.S.W. On 28th May 1904 he married Amelia Wells and they had 4 children.
William enlisted at the age of 39 year, when he was working as a labourer, and the family was living at Kiama, N.S.W.
He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A15 Port of Sydney with 2nd Reinforcements, 26th Battalion on 4th September 1916. The troops arrived in England on 29th October 1916. After further training William was sent to France to join D Company, 36th Battalion, on 21st March 1917.
William served on the Western Front until he was admitted to hospital in France, sick, on 13th October 1917.
He rejoined his unit in Belgium on 17th November 1917. On 30th April 1918 he was transferred to 34th Battalion in the field.
William was killed in action on 17th July 1918. He is buried in Villers-Bretonneaux Military Cemetery, Fouilloy, France: Plot VIII, Row B, Grave 6.
