Alfred Howes (Service No 7482) was born in Sydney, N.S.W. around 1897.

Alfred was single and living & working as a farmer at Crooked River, Gerringong, N.S.W. when he enlisted at the age of 20.

He had first enlisted in December 1915, but was discharged in April 1916, having gone absent without leave.

Alfred embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A20 Hororata with 25th Reinforcements, 2nd Battalion, on 14th June 1917.  When the ship arrived in Capetown on the 19th July, Alfred was immediately admitted to hospital suffering from menigitis, and died at 2 am the following day.

Alfred is buried in Cape Town (Maitland) Cemetery, Woltemade, Cape Town, South Africa: Block I, Grave 121A.
