Claude Kemp (Service No 2170) was born in Bathurst, N.S.W. in September 1896.

When Claude enlisted at the age of 19, he was single, worked as a labourer, and lived at Helensburgh, N.S.W.

He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A42 Boorara with 4th Reinforcements, 54th Battalion, on 19th August 1916.  The troops arrived in England on 13th October 1916 and were sent on to France.

From 24th December 1916, Claude served on the Western Front with B Company, 54th Battalion.  On 15th May 1917 he was admitted to hospital in France with shell shock but returned to his unit 5 days later, on 20th May 1917.

On 25th September 1917, while fighting in the mud of Passchendaele, Claude was killed in action.

Claude has no known grave;  he is comemmorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium.
