Abraham Kenning
Abraham Kenning (Service No 4194) was born at Mount Keira, via Wollongong, N.S.W.
Abraham enlised at the age of 27, when he was single, working as a miner, and living at Corrimal, N.S.W.
He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A6 Aeneas with 13th Reinforcements, 2nd Battalion, on 20th December 1915. After arriving in Egypt he was transferred to 5th Pioneers on 14th February 1916 and served with them on the Western Front from 29th June 1916.
Abraham was recommend for the Military Medal on 24th September 1917:
'At ZILLEBBKE on the night of 18/ 19th September, 1917, Private Kenning displayed great bravery and coolness in rescuing wounded men during an enemy bombardment by gas shells...'
The Military Medal was awarded to Abraham, and gazetted in the Australian Gazette on 7th March, 1918, and the London Gazette on 19 November 1917 (see links below).
Abraham returned to Australia in April 1919 and was discharged on 26th July 1919.
On 29th December 1926 he married Alice Redwin.
Abraham died in Corrimal,N.S.W. in 1962.
