Joseph Lloyd Kelly
Joseph Kelly (Service No 1356) was born around 1893 in Scotland.
When Joseph enlisted at the age of 21, he and his family were living in Helensburgh, N.S.W. At enlistment, Joseph was single and working as a butcher.
Joseph embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A35 Berrima with 1st Reinforcements, 13th Battalion, on 22nd December 1914. After the troops arrived in Egypt Joseph went on to Gallipoli with B Company, 13th Battalion, on 25th April.
On 1st May 1915 Joseph was wounded in action, receiving a gun shot wound to his lower extremities and he was evacuated to Egypt for treatment.
On19th March 1916 Joseph was transferred to 4th Machine Gun Battalion and the troops were sent to France, arriving on 11th June 1916.
On 14th August 1916, while fighting on the Somme near Pozieres, Joseph was killed in action.
There is no known grave for Joseph; he is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneaux.
