Frederick O'Brien (Service No 1452) was born in Nowra, N.S.W. in September 1888, and was educated at St Josephs College, Sydney.

 When Frederick enlisted at the age of 26, he was single, worked as a clerk and lived at Gerringong, N.S.W.

Frederick embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A48 Seang Bee with 2nd Reinforcements, 13th Battalion, on 11th February 1915.  The troops arrived in Egypt and Frederick was sent on to Gallipoli soon after.

He survived the early fighting but was admitted to hospital on 27th June 1915 with influenza. He recovered and returned to D Company, 13th Battalion, on 28th July 1915 and took part in the Lone Pine battles.

In October 1915, Frederick was admitted to hospital in Malta, suffering from dysentery and rejoined his unit in Egypt on 9th March 1916.

The Battalion was sent to France and arrived on 8th June 1916.

On 11th August 1916 John was involved in the battle of Moquet Farm, in the Pozieres area when he was killed.

There is no known grave for John, and there are no details about his death recorded on his on file.

John is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneaux, France.
