John Sharman (Service No 1080) was born in Captains Flat, N.S.W.

When John enlisted at the age of 19 he was living at Corrimal, N.S.W. and working as a coke worker at nearby Bellambi.

John embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A14 Euripides with 1st Reinforcements, Light Trench Mortar Battery on 9th September 1916. The troops arrived in England on 26th October 1916, and after training, John was sent on to France, arriving on 24th April 1917.  In France, John joined B Company, 3rd Battalion.

On 5th May 1917 John was wounded and evacuated to hospital for treatment to gun shot wounds to his left arm.  He returned to his unit on 17th June 1917.

On 14th April 1918 John was reported as killed in action, but in fact, he had been wounded and taken prisoner.  German records state that when he was captured, he was suffering from a gun fracture of his right forearm and a wound to the right side of his head.  John was subsequently admitted to hospital in Belgium on 28th April 1918.  At 11.10 am on 13th May 1918 John died from his wounds.

John is buried at Audenarde Communal Cemetery, East Flanders, Belgium; grave 123.

He is commemorated on the Corrimal Anglican Church Roll of Honour.
