Clarence Redman (Service No 2823) was born in Inverell, N.S.W. and attended Yamba Public School.

Clarence was 23 years old, single, and working as a policeman in Wollongong, N.S.W. when he enlisted.  He had served 3 years in the Scottish rifles Militia and had followed his father into the police force in 1913.

Clarence embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A8 Argyllshire with 9th Reinforcements, on 30th September 1915.  He joined the 4th Battalion in Egypt on 6th January 1916 but was transferred to 56th Battalion on 16th February 1916.

Clarence arrived in France on 29th June 1916 and was promoted to Corporal on 18th July 1916.

On 20th July 1916 Clarence was wounded in action at Fromelle, and was evacuated to hospital in England on 28th July 1916 for treatment of gun shot wounds to his temple and buttocks.  Upon recovery he was returned to his unit in France on 2nd November 1916.

On 10th May 1917 he was promoted to Sergeant.  

On 26th September 1917, while fighting at Polygon Wood in Belgium, 16 Platoon, D Company was advancing through the wood when Clarence was shot in the head and killed.

He was buried at the time but the site of his grave has been lost.

Clarence is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres Belgium.
