James Crompton
James Crompton (Service No 2678) was born in Westhoughton, Lancashire, England, one of 6 children. James came to Australia after 1911.
James enlisted at Kiama, N.S.W. when he was 28 years old, and living at 'Balmoral', Main Road, Woonona, N.S.W. He was single and employed as a miner.
He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A24 Benalla with 5th Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, on 9th November 1916. The troops arrived in England on 9th January 1917. James joined his Battalion in France on 30th April 1917 and served on the Western Front.
On 8th June 1917 James was engaged in fighting at Messines Ridge when he was killed.
James is buried in Bethlehem Farm East Cemetery, Messines, Belgium: Plot I, Row A, Grave 9.
