Arthur Ernest Jones
Arthur Jones (Service No 4532) was born in Wollongong, N.S.W. around 1892 and attended Wollongong Public School.
When Arthur enlisted in Brisbane, at the age of 23 he was married, worked as a labourer, and was a member of the Nundah Volunteer Fire Brigade. Arthur's wife, Maude Elizabeth, was Arthur's nominated next of kin.
Arthur embarked from Brisbane on HMAT A62 Wandilla with 14th Reinforcements, 15th Battalion on 31st January 1916. Shortly after the troops arrived in Egypt on 7th March 1916, Arthur was admitted to a Cairo hospital on 23rd March with a groin and hand injury.
He joined his unit on 2nd April 1916 and the troops were sent to France, arriving on 8th June 1916.
Arthur was killed in action on 8th August 1916 in the Pozieres/ Mouquet Farm area. His papers give no details about his death, other than 'killed in the field'.
There is no known grave for Arthur; he is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneaux, France.
Arthur's widow remarried and settled in Hercules Street, Wollongong, N.S.W. as Mrs Hunt.
