He embarked on SS Makarini with 16th Reinforcements, 1st Battalion on 1st April 1916. After a stopover in Egypt he went on to France arriving on 17th May 1916. On 1st June 1916 Clement was admitted to hospital due to problems with his knee. This was a pre existing condition that should have had him rejected for active service and this was noted on his file. He recovered and joined his unit in France on 1st January 1917.

A month later he was admitted to hospital again with the mumps. He finally joined 3 Platoon, A Company, 1st Battalion on 23rd February 1917.
On 5th May 1917 while attacking at Bullecourt he was hit by machine gun fire and killed instantly. Clement has no known grave and is remembered on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneaux.
