Francis De Boynton
Francis De Boynton (Service No 4544) was born in Drake, NSW in February 1896. He was the youngest of 3 brothers to enlist. At the time of enlistment he was a single 19 year old farmer at Berry, NSW where his family had moved to from Drake.
He embarked on RMS Osterly with 14th Reinforcements, 1st Battalion on 15th January 1916. After arriving in Egypt Francis was transferred to 13th battalion on 4th March 1916. .He arrived in France with No 2 Platoon, A Company, 13th Battalion on 14th June 1916. The battalion were fighting on the Somme and attacking Mouquet Farm where, on 9th August 1916, Francis was in Toms Cut heading to the front line when he was killed by a shell.
He has no known grave and is remembered on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneaux. His brother William (Service No 476) was killed just a week before Francis on 29th July, 1916 and Arthur (Service No 3132) perished in the battle of Messines on 10th July, 1917.
