George Sylvester McCudden
George McCudden (Service No 2360 & 2919) was born in Taree, N.S.W. and had served 6 months with CMF when he enlisted on 5th October 1915 (Service No 2360), at the age of 18. George was assigned to the 6th Light Horse but was discharged medically unfit (rheumatism) on 23rd July 1916.
George re-enlisted (Service No 2919 on 24 November 1916). He was now 19 years old, single,and employed as a postal employee at Thirroul, N.S.W.
George embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A72 Beltana with 6th Reinforcements, 35th Battalion, on 25th November 1916. The troops arrived in England on 29th January 1917. Only a few week later, on 14th February 1917, George was admitted to hospital sick, and discharged on 24th February 1917.
On 19th April 1917 he was transferred to 33rd Battalion as a signaller and joined the troops in France on 17th November 1917. George served on the Western Front until 17th April 1918 when he was wounded in action due to a gas attack. He was evacuated to the Fovant Military Hospital in Wiltshire, England for treatment but developed influenza. George died at 3:30 pm on 14th July 1918.
George was buried with full military honours on 17th July in Sailsbury Cemetery, Wiltshire, England: Row R, Grave 16.
