Denis Patrick Morrissey
Denis Morrissey (Service No 776a - sometimes the 'a' is not used) was born in Jamberoo, NSW about 1889. He enlisted at Lismore, NSW and was a single 27 year old labourer at the time. He embarked from Melbourne on HMAT A71 Nestor with 14th Reinforcements, Machine Gun Company 12, on 21st November 1917. Denis arrived in Egypt on 16th December 1917 and then was sent on to England arriving on 14th January 1918 where he was admitted to hospital in England on 19th February 1918 with influenza and measles.
On 1st June 1918 he joined B Company, 9th Battalion in France and saw service on the Western Front. On 11th August 1918 he was fighting as a light machine gunner when he was hit in the head by a bullet and killed instantly. Denis is buried in Fouquescourt British Cemetery Plot III, Row A, Grave 3.
