Charlie Johnson (Service No 2166) was born in Lockton, Yorkshire, England, and arrived in Australia with his brother in June 1911 when he was 17 years old.

When Charlie enlisted he was 21 years of age, single, worked as a farm labourer, and was living at Figtree, N.SW.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A8 Argyllshire with 4th Reinforcements, 20th Battalion on 30th September 1915.  The troops arrived in Egypt and Charlie was sent to Gallipoli on 12th November 1915.  After the evacuation he returned to Egypt and on 14th February 1916 was admitted to hospital with pneumonia.

After Charlie returned to his unit he was sent to France with 9 Platoon, C Company, 20th Battalion and arrived on 25th March 1916.  

On 6th May 1916 he was wounded in action and admitted to hospital with shrapnel wounds to his right leg and buttocks.  He was also suffering from shell shock.

He returned to his unit in mid November 1916 but he was returned to Australia in August 1917 and discharged medically unfit on 26th December 1917.

Charlie returned to Figtree where he married Lucy Dewley in 1921 and raised a family.

On 14th October 1939 Charlie enlisted in 2nd A.I.F.  Charlie was posted to 2nd Garrison Battalion.  He attended a signal school at Kembla in February 1941 and on 17th June 1941 was promoted to Sergeant.  He was discharged on 28th August 1944.

Charlie died in 1986.
