Neville Liddell Porteous
Neville Porteous (Service No 1992) was born in Hexham, Northumberland, England and arrived in Australia on 15th October 1909. Neville had served in the military for 7 years in England.
At enlistment Neville was single, 29 years old, lived in Wollongong, N.S.W., and worked as a ship's steward.
He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A54 Runic with 3rd Reinforcements, 17th Battalion, on 9th August 1915. The troops arrived on Gallipoli and Neville joined C Company, 17 Battalion on 12th October 1915. After the evacuation of Gallipoli he was sent to Egypt and was then transferred to the Camel Corps on 31st January 1916.
On 7th August 1916 Neville was wounded in action and evacuated to hospital in Egypt for treatment of a bullet wound to his thigh. He returned to duty on 25th September 1916.
On 1st July 1918 he was transferred to 14th Light Horse.
Neville returned to Australia in July 1919 and was discharged on 27th October 1919.
After the war, he went on to serve in the Citizen Military Forces, and enlisted for duty in the Second World War.
In 1920 he married Edith Lock and their daughter Joyce, born in 1921, also went on to serve in World War II.
