Leonard Pryse (Service No 5445) was born in Cheshire, England, and arrived in Australia in 1901.

At enlistment Leonard was 36 years of age, single, employed as a station manager, and lived at Bulli, N.S.W.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A18 Wiltshire with 14th Reinforcements, 17th Battalion, on 22nd August 1916.  He embarked as a Sergeant, having been promoted soon after enlistment on 17th April 1916.

The troops arrived in England on 13th October 1916, Leonard and joined the 17th Battalion in France on 13th December 1917.

On 5th April 1917 he was admitted to hospital after becoming ill, and returned to his unit on 9th April 1917.

Six days later, on 15th April, Leonard was taken prisoner and was held in Limberg Camp.  He was repatriated to England on 29th November 1918 where he requested to be discharged while he was still in England.  This request was approved and he was discharged on 20th December 1918.
