Walter Shirlaw (Service No 7860) was born in Bathurst. At the time of enlistment he was a single 18 year old mine labourer from Clifton who had served 3 years in the Militia.

Walter embarked on HMAT A71 Nestor from Melbourne with Tunnelling Company Reinforcements on 21st November, 1917. He arrived in England on 24th January, 1918 and joined 3rd Tunnel Company in France on 10th March, 1918.

Walter saw service on the Western Front until 8th October, 1918 when he was wounded in action by gassing.

Walter returned to Australia in July, 1919 and was discharged on 1st October, 1919.

After returning he joined the NSW Police force and on 29th March, 1928 he married Idonia Broderick at Waverley.
