Robert Westbury (Service No 4309) was born in Mittagong, N.S.W. in 1899.

Robert had first enlisted in 1915 but was discharged on 31st January 1916 as being underage.

When he enlisted in 1916, Robert was single, 18 years of age, and lived in Wollongong, N.S.W. where he worked as a blacksmith.  He had served 2 years in the Cadets.

He embarked on from Sydney SS Port Nicholson with 11th Reinforcements, 30th battalion, on 8th November 1916.  The troops arrived in England on 10th January 1917 and Robert served there until 22nd November 1917 when he joined 30th Battalion in France.

He saw service on the Western Front until he was wounded in action on 23rd March 1918, when he was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a serious gun shot wound to his chest.

Robert was returned to Australia in June 1918 and discharged medically unfit on 26th October 1918.

In 1924 Robert married Veronica Gleeson.
