Charles Hausknecht (Service No 2055) was born in Maryborough, Queensland.  He came to the Illawarra in N.S.W. and in 1911 married Millicent Reeks at Woonona.

Charles enlisted when he was 31 years of age, and lived at Woonona where he worked as a labourer.  Charles had served 2 years in the Militia.

He embarked from Brisbane on HMAT A55 Kyarra with 5th Reinforcements, 9th Battalion, on 16th April 1915.  The troops arrived in Egypt and Charles was sent on to Gallipoli to join 9th Battalion on 22nd June 1915.  He served on Gallipoli until evacuated to hospital sick in Cairo on 21st November 1915.

Charles saw some service in Egypt and was wounded in action on 14th June 1916, and admitted to hospital with a gun shot wound to his thigh.

He was returned to Australia in July 1916 and discharged medically unfit on 26th September 1916.

Charles and Millicent had two children. 

Charles died in Queensland in 1960.
